In Memoriam

   When I think of Memorial Day, I think of primarily one thing—school is over for the year! Other people may also think of summer’s arrival, barbecues in the backyard complete with grilled hamburgers, juicy watermelon, and homemade ice cream, and perhaps a parade down Main Street. While Memorial Day is a fun time to relax with family and friends, marking the end of the school term and the beginning of summer, the holiday has much deeper significance to America. Originally called Decoration Day, the holiday we now call Memorial Day was initially observed in the years following the Civil War. That war devastated our nation. The human toll was extremely high with an estimated 620,000 killed. It was a massive loss of life. Not long after the war’s end in 1865, people began to observe a time when they decorated the fallen soldiers’ graves with flowers and held prayer services as a time of remembrance and healing. When our nation became embattled in yet another devastating war—The Great War (also known as World War I)—Decoration Day evolved as an opportunity to remember fallen soldiers from all wars. To begin with, Decoration Day was celebrated on May 30, but in 1968 Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, and the holiday, by then called Memorial Day, was declared a federal holiday and adjusted accordingly. By moving Memorial Day to always being observed the last Monday of May, it allowed federal workers to have a three-day weekend. Which brings us to today. Enjoy this wonderful three-day weekend. Celebrate with your loved ones. Take a moment of silence at 3:00 to recall those who have given their all for our country. Their sacrifice has created a place where we are free to pursue our dreams and craft our lives. It’s Memorial Day. Schizophrenia A normal person is able to go about their day without any problems at all, however, for a person with schizophrenia, their day may be next to impossible. The voices playing throughout that person’s head all the time distracts them from their everyday activities. Their reality is much different than a person without this disorder. It is believed that a prolonged misuse of drugs or alcohol may lead to diseases such as schizophrenia (Phillips 4, 2000). If the disease runs in the family, then it is more than likely a close relative will get the disease later in life. â€Å"A child whose parent has schizophrenia has about a 10 percent chance of developing schizophrenia themselves.† (Smith 2013) Many believe that schizophrenia is inherited because genes are shared throughout the family and the mental disease is passed down through the family. Another possible cause of this disease is a bad brain development. When I start back to my family history on both of my parents side I can go as far back as my great-great grandparents on both sides. On my mom side her great grandmother was from a Caribbean island she later came to the U.S. because of my great-great grandfather wanted to live in Mississippi to work there to earn more money. Later my great grandfather and grandmother moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan with my grandfather who was from Michigan. My grandfather parents lived in the south when he was younger. But my grandfather’s great-great grandparents where slaves who were run a ways who later went back south after the civil war. My grandparents lived in Grand Rapids and raised a family both of my grandparents had kids from a past marriage. They later had kids with each other the first child was my mom after her was my uncle Ben, after him it was my aunt Tracey. The last child that they had was my uncle Corey. For my dad’s side of the family my great-great grandfather was a Native American who lived down in Georgia with his wife and kids. My great grandmother later had my grandmother who lived down in Georgia with my grandfather. They later moved to Alexandria, VA where my dad and brothers and sisters where born. Before I was my born my grandfather died because of a hit and run. My parents later meet at Howard University where my mom attended school to become a teacher. My parents dated for about 5 years and later had me in 1994.My parents never married was a child born out of wedlock I also have two siblings but they are half siblings according to the Webster dictionary a . .gout with him and my god-brother Tre a lot he basically raised me like I was his son to this day his death still hurts me. But out of all of the bad in my family there has been good. Such as my Uncle Ben got remarried and had two daughters from the marriage he is still married to his wife now. Also we have added a boat load of kids on both sides of the family which is great because the younger kids will be able to continue the tradition.Overall, I have great family I know people who look from the outside might see a dysfunctional family but I love my family. I wish things could be better but I wouldn’t change anything for the world. A database is said to be consistent when it has the following features; it has referential integrity, it maintains entity integrity and if it remains within the constraints set by the domain values. During the execution of a transaction, a database should be in an inconsistent state where no other transaction should be exposed to it. The reliability of a database is determined by its capability to recover and its resiliency. A transaction is a sequence of operations involving the commands of reading and writing on a database. For instance an SQL statement is regarded as a transaction, a program that is enclosed by the commands ‘Begin-transaction’ and ‘end’ is also a transaction. A transaction can be terminated by commands of committing it or rolling it back. If a transaction is committed, it has been successfully completed and if it is rolled back, it has been aborted. The commit command makes the effect of the operations of the database permanent and the results can be viewed by all other transactions. The rollback command on the other hand has the effect of undoing the operations and restoring the database to the state it was before the transaction was executed[2]. Transactions can fail to complete for three reasons. They could be aborted by the management system, either if the system crashes or if the transaction aborts itself. When this occurs, the effects of the transaction should be undone. This helps the user to forget about the undone transaction as it has already been taken care of. However, if a transaction is completed it should be durable and its effects should last. The database management system log ensures the undoing of incomplete transactions where necessary. A database must ensure that four very important qualities of a transaction are fulfilled. These are atomicity, consistency, isolation and durability. All transactions should be atomic, meaning that they are supposed to either happen or not. All transactions should run by themselves and should be consistent. By default, the database management system assumes that the transactions are consistent. Transactions should be isolated from the effects of other transactions that are executable concurrently. The effects of the transaction should be consistent once the user is notified of their success even in the event of the crashing of the system. A user is usually responsible for the consistency of their transaction. If a database is in a consistent state when the transaction is beginning, the database should remain in the same state after the transaction is over. The management system for the database does the work of enforcing the commands and other constraints that the transactions should operate on. Every transaction sees the database as consistent. The user issues commands that prompt transactions and assume that each transaction shall be executed by itself; however, the management system of the database arranges the actions to be performed concurrently. The total effect shows the user that the many transactions that they have tasked the system to perform have been executed one after the other[3]. Since transactions are seen as series of read and write commands by the management system, a list of actions is developed. The management system also specifies if the transaction is to be committed or aborted. A schedule is created by the management system for transactions. The schedule is a list of actions, whether read, commit, write or abort that are attributed to a set of transactions. The order in which they happen in the schedule is similar to how they occur in the transaction. The schedule is also seen as an execution sequence of a set of transactions. The schedule describes actions as they are seen by the management system. Transactions are of different types and can be classified according to different classifications. By applications, transactions can be regular or distributed transactions. The transactions can also be compensating or heterogeneous. A compensating transaction has the purpose of undoing the effects of previous transactions. A heterogeneous transaction on the other hand has the runs in a heterogeneous database. By duration, transactions can be classified as short-life or on-line transactions or as Batch or long-life transactions. By structure, there are nested transactions and traditional flat structured transactions[4]. There are other types of transactions, for instance, a sub-transaction is a transaction that must begin after its parent transaction and end before its parent transaction. This means that the commit or abort command of this kind of transaction depends on its parent. The sub-transactions that exist within one parent are executable in parallel. Nappy Roots essays On October 31, I attended the Nappy Roots concert at Millet Hall. The whole gymnasium was packed with people who came with the intention of having a great time listening to quality Rap music. From the Halloween costumes to the power of the crowd, the whole event was unforgettable. Who is Nappy Roots? Six students from Western Kentucky University decided to follow their dreams and form a rap group in 1996. Skinny DeVille, R Prophet, Big V, Scales, Ron Clutch, and B Stille are the stage names of Nappy Roots. Their real names are William Hughes, Ryan Anthony, Vito Tisdale, Melvin Adams, Ronald Wilson, and Brian Scott. Their southern-based roots, from Georgia and Kentucky, give them their unique style. The diversity of the people in the concert was of a wide variety. The young crowd dressed informally or even dressed up for Halloween, making it a very interesting site. I was surprised to find many people dancing to the music. This was a big difference from the conservative formal concerts I have attended for this class. The opening act was disappointing. First, they were thirty minutes late. Second, I couldnt even hear what their name was due to the horrible accent the lead singer had. Third, they lacked up-beat songs that people could relate too. Two of the songs werent even songs people could dance to. The other song was too fast to hear what the words were, and people were in a state of confusion. Overall the group didnt seem prepared for such an unforgiving crowd. The long twenty-minute intermission came to an end. Nappy Roots ran to the stage, and the place explodes. We all listened to music off of their third album Watermelon Chicken & Gritz. The first song goes through and I noticed that one device they used was a sort of a pre-lude.
